Adolescent girls have more opportunities than ever before. But for all their apparent power, is this really the era of the girl?
To find out view Proud To Be a Girl, a new half-hour documentary that focuses on three diverse, talented young women as they explore the dilemma of the modern girl. Leading psychologist, Carol Gilligan, and actress/mother, Julianne Moore, provide advice and expertise. Helene Lerner is the program's host.
Profiled are: Ashlie Butler, a talented dancer and actress, one of a small number of African-Americans attending a prestigious private school; Lauren Hermes, a child of divorced parents and a second mother to her younger siblings; and Miranda Oropeza, a singer-songwriter whose ethnic background—Mexican-American-French-Italian—has given her a unique perspective on how to define herself.
Proud To Be a Girl looks at a range of issues facing girls today, including the need to find a creative means of self-expression, the power of friendship and collaboration, the problems of racism and prejudice, and the pull between girlhood and womanhood.
